VANCOUVER – WestJet (TSX:WJA) has filed an appeal after the Supreme Court of British Columbia refused to throw out a proposed class-action lawsuit that accuses the company of fostering a corporate culture that tolerates harassment against female employees. The airline argues Justice Mary Humphries was wrong to have dismissed the company’s application to strike the legal action, repeating its argument that the dispute belongs before a human rights tribunal and workers’ compensation board.A court document filed last week by WestJet also says the two-year deadline has passed to file a claim and argues the original lawsuit should be put on hold until an appeal is resolved.Former flight attendant Mandalena Lewis is suing WestJet over allegations of gender-based discrimination, accusing her former employer of breaking its promise to provide a harassment-free workplace for women.Lewis has not filed a response to the notice of appeal.None of the allegations made in the lawsuit have been proven in court. The lawsuit proposes to represent all of WestJet’s past and current female flight attendants whose employment included a so-called anti-harassment promise, but it has yet to be approved as a class action.
The Congressional Coalition on Adoption Institute (CCAI) is honoring actress Katherine Heigl, singer-songwriter Josh Kelley, R&B artist Ne-Yo, and PEOPLE Magazine as the 2012 National Angels in Adoption for their dedication and commitment to adoption and foster care issues.CCAI will recognize them, along with local Angels recognized by 143 Members of Congress, at their 14th annual awards gala in Washington, D.C. Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Senator Roy Blunt (R-MO) Senator John Boozman (R-AR), Representative Michele Bachmann (R-MN), and Representative Karen Bass (D-CA) will present the awards; musical entertainment will be provided by award-winning musician Steven Curtis Chapman.“The Angels in Adoption Program proves that all it takes for a child’s life story to have a happy ending is for someone to step in and be their hero,” said CCAI Executive Director Kathleen Strottman. “Katherine, Josh, Ne-Yo and PEOPLE Magazine chose to get involved and make a difference. We are hoping others will hear their stories and feel inspired to do the same.”Even before they were married, Heigl and Kelley had agreed on the importance of adoption in their future family. Heigl has spoken often of her strong feelings about the issue, as her sister was adopted from Korea. Two years after their wedding, Heigl and Kelley adopted their daughter Naleigh from South Korea when she was only 10 months old. Kelley also wrote the song “Naleigh Moon” for her and Heigl produced the song’s music video. The couple recently adopted their second daughter, Adalaide, from Louisiana this past spring.“Adoption has always been a part of my life and my family,” Heigl said. “Josh and I are honored to be selected as National Angels in Adoption and we hope this recognition will help raise awareness of the millions of children worldwide who are without families.”In 2007, Grammy Award winning R&B singer-songwriter Ne-Yo founded the Compound Foundation, a non-profit organization committed to increasing awareness about the status of those in the child welfare system. The foundation supports and partners with residential care facilities and independent group homes through programs aimed at teaching entrepreneurship and life skills that will empower youth to become productive, successful, and independent adults.“I am deeply honored to be recognized as an Angel in Adoption. The fact is that every youth in foster care should receive the love and support that a family provides. The Compound Foundation works to help make that possible.”PEOPLE Magazine has written countless stories on celebrities who have adopted children and has also covered adoption and foster care stories in its weekly section, “Heroes Among Us.”“I am honored that Angels in Adoption has recognized PEOPLE’s rich history of reporting these beautiful stories of the utmost importance to families and children,” said Betsy Gleick, Executive Editor of PEOPLE. “We know they mean a lot to our readers.”“Angels in Adoption is unlike any other program in the Nation’s Capital. Because of it, over 1900 Angels have come to Washington in celebration of adoption and left with a renewed appreciation of all that adoption makes possible,” said Kathleen Strottman. “On Capitol Hill, knowledge is power. The Angels in Adoption Program gives Members of Congress the knowledge they need to use the power they have to help make the dream of a family a reality for every child.”The Angels in Adoption Program was established in 1999 as a Congressional press conference to honor outstanding individuals. Since then, the program has evolved into a yearlong public awareness campaign that culminates in an annual awards gala and celebration in Washington, D.C.Source:PR Newswire

In Medan the UNHCR will investigate whether they are refugees or asylum seekers,” the Chief Immigration officer at Padang, Elfinur said. A group of Sri Lankan illegal immigrants have been transferred from a detention center in Padang to Medan in North Sumatra, local media reports said. The Indonesian media said that the Padang Immigration Office sent 16 Sri Lankan illegal immigrants to Medan, the third group of illegal immigrants to be transferred this week. Elfinur said that the immigrants were transferred from Padang because the detention center was full. The Sri Lankans who were transferred had reached Indonesia by boat while heading to Australia to seek asylum.Nearly 46 Sri Lankans were arrested earlier this year and detained at Padang but according to the Indonesian media the detention center at Padang can accommodate only half of that amount. The United Kingdom could lose close to $2 billion in exports unless more roll-over trade deals are concluded before Brexit, or the day the UK plans to leave the European Union, according to new research from UN trade body, UNCTAD.Although some bilateral deals have been done with several countries which would allow the UK to continue with preferential access to the huge EU market, about 20 per cent of UK non-EU exports are at risk of facing higher tariffs from countries such as Turkey, South Africa, Canada and Mexico. The UNCTAD research published on Tuesday shows that if more agreements are not concluded by exit day, it could cost the UK economy almost $2 billion, with sectors such as apparel, textiles, motor vehicles and processed food products facing higher tariffs.Losses could be as high as $750 million in the motor vehicles sector alone, UNCTAD estimates. These outcomes pale in comparison to the export losses that the UK will experience in the EU market in the case of a so-called “no-deal” Brexit.UNCTAD’s research indicates that would result in UK losses of at least $16 billion, representing an approximate 7 per cent loss of overall UK exports to the EU.Somalia: worst harvest since 2011, with more than 2 million expected to go hungry Renewed warnings of deadly destruction in the Bahamas caused by Hurricane Dorian have been issued by UN agencies and partners, who said on Tuesday that they’re worried “for every single” person on two of the worst-hit Caribbean islands.Briefing journalists in Geneva, Jens Laerke from the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that initial assessments from Grand Bahama and the Abaco Islands – where the storm made landfall and is effectively stationary as of Tuesday morning, local time – were “rather catastrophic”.Read our full coverage here. Night owls, individuals who stay up late and struggle to get out of bed in the morning, are more likely to die sooner than morning larks, the first study into their death rates has found.New research by the University of Surrey and Northwestern University in the US found that people who naturally stay up late were 10 per cent more likely to die within the six and a half year study period compared to those who preferred the morning.Researchers say that the ongoing stress of operating in a traditional 9-5 society was having a huge impact on millions of people and could be shortening their lives.”This is a public health issue that can no longer be ignored,” said Malcolm von Schantz, a professor of chronobiology at the University of Surrey.”We should discuss allowing evening types to start and finish work later, where practical. And we need more research about how we can help evening types cope with the higher effort of keeping their body clock in synchrony with sun time.” Night owls struggle to work during usual office hours, and the stress may be harming their health, say researchers Credit:Getty Images Contributor Want the best of The Telegraph direct to your email and WhatsApp? Sign up to our free twice-daily Front Page newsletter and new audio briefings. In the new study, scientists found owls had higher rates of diabetes, psychological disorders and neurological disorders. But the team has previously shown that whether someone is an owl or a lark is half genetic and half environment, meaning there may be ways to keep body clock issues under control.”You’re not doomed,” added Dr Knutson.”Part of it you don’t have any control over and part of it you might.”The team recommends that night owls can help themselves by trying to become exposed to light early in the morning and not at night. Keeping regular bedtimes, maintaining a healthy lifestyle and trying to do tasks earlier in the day can help to reset circadian rhythms. In future studies, the researchers want to test an intervention with owls to get them to shift their body clocks to adapt to an earlier schedule. “Then we’ll see if we get improvements in blood pressure and overall health,” she said.”If we can recognize these chronotypes are, in part, genetically determined and not just a character flaw, jobs and work hours could have more flexibility for owls.”They shouldn’t be forced to get up for an 8 a.m. shift. Make work shifts match peoples’ chronotypes. Some people may be better suited to night shifts.”The study was published in the journal Chronobiology International. The research, involved nearly 500,000 Brits aged between 38 and 73, and found that around nine per cent considered themselves evening people, while 27 per cent identified as morning types. If extrapolated to the entire population of the Britain it would mean around 5.8 million people were at greater risk of early death because they were out of sync with the environment.Previous studies in this field have focused on the higher rates of metabolic dysfunction and cardiovascular disease, but this is the first to look at mortality risk.”Night owls trying to live in a morning lark world may have health consequences for their bodies,” said co-lead author Kristen Knutson, associate professor of neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine based in Chicago.”It could be that people who are up late have an internal biological clock that doesn’t match their external environment,” said Dr Knutson.”It could be psychological stress, eating at the wrong time for their body, not exercising enough, not sleeping enough, being awake at night by yourself, maybe drug or alcohol use. There are a whole variety of unhealthy behaviors related to being up late in the dark by yourself.”

Like other federal workers, employees at the IRS will soon miss a second paycheck this Monday. The president of the union chapter that represents 211 IRS employees in the San Diego and Imperial County region said the pain and economic hardship for his membership is growing. Malcolm Gettmann, the president of Chapter 92 of the National Treasury Employee Union said one of his members is on the brink of homelessness. When the rent was hiked on his old apartment, the employee began to search for new housing and then the government was shutdown.“He basically will be homeless because as he fills out rental applications, he’s a furloughed federal employee with no source of income. No one wants to rent to him,” Gettmann said. The situation isn’t much better for more than 30,000 IRS employees who were ordered back to work last week by the Trump Administration. They are the lower paid employees who do the processing of tax refunds. Some might argue that their situation is worse that those who remain idle at home, since they’re expected to work without pay. Some of the recalled employees whose duties are considered essential aren’t showing up for work and exercising a union provision called a “hardship” exemption. That allows a worker to request a legal absence from work, if they have a hardship such as not having enough money for child care or gas.Legal analyst Dan Eaton said under the present circumstances, supervisors are approving the hardship exemptions.“Being forced to work and having to go into work without having the means to pay for child care and transportation presumably is causing a great deal of hardship. But it’s important to understand that the worker cannot abuse this hardship exemption to stay home as a means of protest. That is not what the hardship exemption is designed for,” Eaton said.In California, the employees who are recalled without pay are in Fresno, where federal tax refunds are processed. In San Diego, where employees remain off the job, we visited the downtown San Diego office for IRS taxpayer assistance. The door was locked and a sign on the door said“No employees are available to assist you at this time.” Gettman said he fears the IRS is approaching a tipping point. “It is without a doubt, going to delay people receiving their refunds if it goes on for much longer.” January 24, 2019 Shutdown affecting IRS employees, could impact tax refunds Posted: January 24, 2019 Sasha Foo, Categories: Local San Diego News FacebookTwitter
“I was in contact with them and could confirm that they made it safely to their location. It was a great experience,” she said.Trafton is a working mom and prefers driving her children herself, but with two children in two different schools, she said Urban Village Kids is her second best option. She said the safety features bring her peace of mind. “Just like if you had a child in a daycare. A lot of people want daycares that have cameras because they want to be able to see their kids and want to make sure they’re safe,” Trafton said. “Urban Village Kids is using the same type of technology where you can watch your kid on a camera in the car and know that they’re safe. You do get confirmation of pick up and drop off.”Urban Village Kids is expected to launch in November.Copyright 2019 Sunbeam Television Corp. All rights reserved. MIAMI (WSVN) – A South Florida mother is launching a service that she hopes will help lighten the load for parents transporting their children.Candice Saffer is a working mother of three children who founded Urban Village Kids, a service meant to transport children through carpooling or a single ride.“They’re all three very active children, and we do what we can for them on a daily basis, and they participate in all the daily activities they possibly can,” said Saffer about her children. She said the service will allow parents to track and view their children as they are being driven from place to place.“The most important thing for me was to have, for example, a GPS tracking. We’re going to have cameras in the car,” said Saffer, “so the parents are going to have full knowledge and transparency every single second of the ride.”“When a driver takes a child they are not going to ever have the child at a curb. They’re gonna stop, they’re gonna park, they’re gonna walk the child in,” Saffer added. “We’re gonna follow every single sign-in and sign-out procedure that is from the business that we are taking the child to.”More than 100 users have already tested the service, including Rochelle Trafton, who is a working mother with two children.
Justin Thomas won the Honda Classic in a playoff, but he handed out another L to fan after his drive on the 16th hole, earlier on Sunday. After Thomas ripped his tee shot, a fan could be heard on the course mic cheering for the ball to find a bunker. Thomas heard the remark and identified the fan in the gallery to have him removed. Thomas added, “Enjoy your day buddy, you’re gone,” which sounds like it’s right out of the Shooter McGavin playbook. We’re all for fan etiquette, but this is pretty soft. It’s not like the guy was screaming in his backswing. Watch and decide for yourself.

Photo courtesy of Business Wire.November 16, 2017 — Stratasys Ltd. announced that surgeons at the University of Mainz Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery Department in Germany are using Stratasys PolyJet 3-D printing to transform the hospital’s surgical planning process for complex, life-critical vascular cases. According to the University hospital, the use of 3-D printed models for surgical planning has seen a significant reduction in costs at the institution when designing and fitting implants — while the hospital reports relevant time-savings during surgery, leading to an improvement in patient outcomes. As an internationally recognized Center of Excellence when it comes to its Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, the University Hospital Mainz provides research and patient care in areas related to the heart, thorax and blood vessels in the human body. The hospital treats several patients suffering from life-threatening aortic illnesses needing immediate attention and complex, patient-specific surgical treatment. According to Prof. Dr. Bernhard Dorweiler, head of the Department of Vascular Surgery at University Hospital Mainz, the adoption of 3-D printing is playing a crucial role in elevating the standard of patient care.“On average, CT [computed tomography] scans with 1,000-2,000 images can be made per vascular-related patient case, which the surgeons use to analyze and diagnose the illness. This can be ambiguous and time-consuming when the issue is complex,” said Dorweiler. “With 3-D-printed models, we can quickly understand the individual patient anatomy and best determine the type of treatment required to successfully treat it.”This was exemplified in a recent case whereby Dorweiler and his team were approached by a 53-year-old woman who had already been turned down by several other hospitals in Germany and beyond – such was the complexity around the illness and the potential risk of operation. Due to an aortic malformation close to the heart, the patient was suffering from a bulging blood vessel on her neck. Recognizing the need for urgent medical attention, Dorweiler and his team reviewed CT scans, however the results did not provide the level of clarity required to make an accurate diagnosis.“Looking through the CT scans, it was impossible to clearly visualize the anatomy,” said Dorweiler. “So we decided to 3-D-print a model, and it was then for the first time that it became clear what the origin and magnitude of the problem was. Not only did we use the model to explain our findings to the patient to increase her compliance for the planned three-step operation, but we even took it into each of the three surgeries as a point of reference during operation, which was crucial to the successful outcome.”To date, treatment of complex aortic illnesses with the endovascular method has been a difficult procedure, with surgeons relying on a monitor to implant a small stent through the arteries to be placed at the affected area of the aorta. In a recent case, Dorweiler and his team faced this challenge with a very complex case of aortic arch aneurysm. Requiring an intricate implant, the team undertook a pre-operative simulation of the surgery using a stent prototype and 3-D-printed aortic arch model of the patient. This process has since been repeated across several cases with surgeons able to practice surgery on the model repeatedly, ensuring the correct design and fit of the stent implant the first time — significantly reducing time and cost in the operating theatre.“As pointed out in current published studies, there are savings in operating time of 5-45 minutes when using 3-D-printed models prior to surgery,” said Dorweiler. “Research is still ongoing, but if you take an average surgery time of 2-4 hours, you are looking at time savings of up to 40 percent. When you are dealing with complex vascular cases every day, these time-savings can be the difference between life and death.”At the forefront of German medical research and development, the Vascular Surgery Department at the University Hospital Mainz has an extensive training facility, in which 3-D printing is integral.“We use the Stratasys Eden260VS 3D Printer in our BiomaTicS research platform to produce models of aortic anatomies from real-life cases, so that we can use them to teach future vascular surgeons how to successfully perform complex endovascular surgeries,” said Dorweiler. “With the ability to 3-D-print patient-specific aortic models in clear transparent material, the trainees can practice endovascular procedures and learn difficult Wire-Skills using the accurate replicas of blood vessels. For healthcare, it is crucial that we continue to leverage the capabilities of 3-D printing for medical training, education and research for future breakthrough-implementation.”For more information: www.stratasys.com FacebookTwitterLinkedInPrint分享 Surgeons use highly-accurate, transparent 3-D-printed model to practice the complex implant of a stent through the patient’s arteries. A University of Utah biologist has identified 33 new species of predatory ants living throughout Latin America, including 10 in Costa Rica.Professor John Longino found the species as far north as Mexico and Cuba, and others as far south as Argentina. The carnivorous ants live on the ground in tropical forests, presumably feasting on soft-bodied insects, millipedes and spiders. Longino collected their specimens by sifting through litter on the forest floor, mostly rotting plant matter.“They have broad, shield-like faces, no eyes and large mandibles,” Longino said in a phone interview with The Tico Times. The fearsome appearance of their heads gave Longino the idea to name a few species after Mayan mythology’s death god, underworld and crocodile demon (Eurhopalothrix hunhau, Eurhopalothrix xibalba and Eurhopalothrix zipacna, respectively). Bumpy hairs protrude from the tops of the ants and they are nearly blind; their primitive eyes are only able to detect light. Their mandibles, or jaws, move from side to side to grasp prey. The ants’ size — about a quarter of a grain of rice — belies these scary characteristics. Furthermore, Longino noted that the gruesome-looking adults are actually incapable of devouring their prey, relying on the colony’s larva to consume and then regurgitate what they capture. Longino said this was a common feature of most ants.“The colony is like a whole organism,” Longino said. “The larvae are like the stomach. When adults are picking up cookie crumbs from your picnic, they can’t eat it themselves.”Longino identified one species in Monteverde, a cloud forest paradise in north-central Costa Rica, that he named Ortizae after Patricia Ortiz, an Ecuadorian who had been studying and teaching wildlife biology in the region. Ortiz, 40, died in March while at a waterfall with several of her students. Rocks fell on the group, striking and killing her.“She was a rising star of tropical biology,” Longino said.Ortiz had worked since 1997 at the Monteverde Institute. Longino said the name was fitting as the ant species was restricted to the Monteverde region.Longino has worked in Costa Rica since 1979, where he conducted doctorate research in Corcovado National Park while attending the University of Texas. He credits the well-preserved tropical forest for why he spent so much time in the country. “I learned more in those two years than I ever have since,” he said. While doing research in Monteverde, Longino met his wife — a biology graduate student who focused on the other end of the forest, the canopy. Longino also ran an insect biodiversity program for 15 years in Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui in northeastern Costa Rica.Recent work has moved Longino north to Nicaragua and Mexico, but he hopes to return to Costa Rica. He said he aims to study ants in the Talamanca high forests in south central Costa Rica.Longino credited the nation’s extensive national park system for his lengthy and hopefully continuing wildlife research in Costa Rica.“Costa Ricans have heard this many times, but it can’t be said enough,” Longino said. “How proud they should be for preserving these national parks. They have much more in them than creepy little ants.”Longino has additional photos of the ants published at his website antweb.org. Facebook Comments
