Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist closed out their opening rounds dead even as each team combined to shoot a 295, while shooting seven strokes above par. The two team’s performances tie them for first place heading into day two action.The Bearkats entered Monday as the tournament’s No. 1 seed and found their groove early on the shoulders of Hanna Alberto who drained six of Sam Houston State’s 14 birdies on the afternoon. H. Alberto currently stands second individually after shooting a 71 to go one stroke under par. Kenlie Barrett sits even after her opening round, ranking her third among all individuals. SHSU led the field in Par 4 scoring with a 4.14 average to go along with their 4.90 average in Par 5 scoring. Jenna Phillips led the Sam Houston team with 14 pars.Houston Baptist, who teed off alongside Sam Houston State, employed a team effort to keep pace with the Bearkats throughout the opening 18 holes. The Huskies are led by Kaity Cummings who is tied for fourth overall after carding a 73 on the afternoon. Right behind Cummings are a trio of HBU teammates in Lexi Brooks, Alisa Chong and Sara Zrnikova who each recorded a 74 (+2. Brooks provided one of the tournament’s two birdies on the day, needing just three turns to tuck away her ball on a 497-yard par five.Following their day one successes, Sam Houston State and Houston Baptist will once again pair up and tee Tuesday morning at 10:15 a.m. CT.Central Arkansas finds themselves just two strokes behind the leaders with a 297 in their opening round. The Bears will partner up with the fourth-place Lamar Cardinals who currently stand 14 over par with a 302. UCA looks to be within striking distance as they rank second as a team in Par 3 (3.05), Par 4 (4.26) and Par 5 scoring (4.95). Central Arkansas has also combined for 55 pars and 13 birdies.Laura Pasalodos Barcelo recorded an incredible round that left the her at the top of the individual leaderboard with a score of 70, two shots under par. Barcelo joined HBU’s Brooks as the only other player on day one to record a birdie and also did so on No. 2.Lamar will join Central Arkansas in the tee box Tuesday morning for a 9:30 a.m. round-two start time.Stephen F. Austin (305, +17) and McNeese (309, +21) will begin their second round at 8:45 a.m. Leading off the field will be Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (311, +23) and Incarnate Word (323, +35) with an 8 a.m. tee time.last_img
