Conservatives call for emergency meeting after PMO SNCLavalin report

first_imgOTTAWA (NEWS 1130) – The federal opposition is calling for an emergency committee meeting to investigate allegations the Prime Minister’s Office may have tried to politically interfere with criminal proceedings against Quebec engineering firm SNC-Lavalin.Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer says the explanations from the prime minister and his team in the wake of the allegations, reported in the Globe and Mail, simply aren’t good enough. That’s why he says his party will request an emergency Justice Committee Meeting to call witnesses and get answers.“This matter strikes at the very heart of our rule of law and calls into serious question the ethics and conduct of those at the highest level,” he said.Conservative Leader @AndrewScheer says his party is exploring legal avenues if Liberals try to block an attempt to launch a Justice committee investigation #cdnpoli— Cormac Mac Sweeney (@cmaconthehill) February 8, 2019He is also warning the Liberals not to block the efforts for a meeting.“If the Liberals vote this down, it is quite clear that there is a cover up going on,” he added. The Conservatives want to call witnesses such as former Justice Minister @Puglaas, current Justice Minister @DavidLametti, and top PMO Officials. #cdnpoli— Cormac Mac Sweeney (@cmaconthehill) February 8, 2019Scheer says he supports an NDP call for an investigation, noting the Canadian Civil Liberties Association is calling for a criminal investigation.Federal NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has said the prime minister should have nothing to fear from an independent investigation by the federal ethics commissioner if, as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau insists, the allegations are not true.“All this cries out for some serious investigation,” Singh said in a telephone interview with the Canadian Press. “At the end of the day, Canadians deserve to have a government on their side, on the side of justice, not on the side of a multinational corporation.”The New Democrats have since officially requested an investigation from the Ethic’s Commissioner. He noted the timeline of events is suspicious.SNC-Lavalin was charged in 2015 by the RCMP and openly called for a remediation agreement to avoid damaging the company, a major employer in Quebec. After lobbying by the company of government officials, including those in the PMO, the government included in its 2018 budget a Criminal Code amendment to allow such agreements to be negotiated in cases of corporate crime, as is done in the United States and the United Kingdom. The Globe reports top officials in the Prime Minister’s Office tried to pressure then-Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould to drop criminal prosecution against the company. In a brief statement to the media, Wilson-Raybould — who is now the Veterans Affairs Minister — says she can’t discuss the matter because she is bound by solicitor-client privilege.Meantime, the parliamentary secretary to justice has offered the most sweeping denial yet from the Trudeau government.“At no point has the current minister of justice, or the former minister of justice, been pressured or directed,” Arif Virani said.NEW: Former Justice Minister @Puglaas has released a short statement on the SNC/PMO influence story. “As the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, I am bound by solicitor-client privilege in this matter.” #cdnpoli— Cormac Mac Sweeney (@cmaconthehill) February 8, 2019last_img read more

US jury tells JJ to pay 29 mn in talc cancer trial

first_imgCalifornia: A California jury on Wednesday ordered Johnson & Johnson to pay $29 million to a woman who said that asbestos in the company’s talcum-powder-based products, including Johnson’s Baby Powder, caused her mesothelioma. The verdict, in California Superior Court in Oakland, marks the latest defeat for the healthcare conglomerate, which faces more than 13,000 talc-related lawsuits nationwide. J&J said it was disappointed with the verdict and would appeal, citing “serious procedural and evidentiary errors” in the course of the trial. The New Brunswick, New Jersey-based company denies that its talc causes cancer, saying numerous studies and tests by regulators worldwide have shown that its talc is safe and asbestos-free.last_img

SC asks EC to decide by May 6 complaints against PM Modi

first_imgNEW DELHI: The Supreme Court Thursday directed the Election Commission to decide by May 6 nine complaints of the Congress party alleging MCC violations by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah. The poll panel told a bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi that it has already decided on two out of the 11 complaints which were filed by the Congress party against Modi and Shah for alleged violation of the Model Code of Conduct. Senior advocate, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Congress Lok Sabha MP Sushmita Dev, who has filed a petition in the apex court on the issue, said that they had given 11 representations to EC against the duo, but it has decided on only two. Also Read – India gets first tranche of Swiss account details under automatic exchange framework”The Election Commission shall decide the remaining representations of the petitioners before we hear the matter again on Monday (May 6),” said the bench also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Sanjiv Khanna. The poll panel has given a clean chit to PM Modi for three of his speeches. In her plea, Dev has alleged that “inaction” by EC on complaints against top BJP leaders was “a sign of invidious discrimination” as also “arbitrary, capricious and impermissible” as it was destructive of the integrity of the electoral process. It has been alleged that BJP leaders have been violating MCC during the last four weeks and the EC has not taken any decisions on as many as 40 complaints of Congress party. In a related development, Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks, tagging BJP chief Amit Shah a murder-accused at an election campaign, was not a violation of Model Code of Conduct (MCC), the Election Commission said here on Thursday. Nirmala Sitharamans major challenge ahead How to widen income tax net

first_imgUnion Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharam in her maiden budget speech pondered the miniscule number of 3.7 crore income tax payers in India, a nation of 132 crore people figuring just below China in terms of the world’s most populous country.Ironic but the tax payers’ size at 3.7 crore is nowhere near the number of voters registered in our country at 82 crore, indicating the strong political narrative undermining the plea of economists and accountants to make it broad-based and more compliant. Currently, 3.3 percent of Indian population is filing Income Tax returns (ITR), which is far less compared to 8 percent in China. In her buget speech, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, like many of her predecessors, reiterated the wider belief that ours is essentially a ‘non-compliant’ society in terms of payment of taxes. But the truth is that ours is hugely a ‘subsidised’ nation where agriculturists, forming the biggest chunk at 75 percent of the population, are availing the tax exemption citing the agricultural income. In sheer numbers, these agriculturists constitute a whopping 61.5 crore and many of them buy cars, bungalows and any luxury item like other tax payers in India. Next comes the other segment of people who really fall ‘Below the Poverty Line’ and they constitute 24 percent of the population or 20.5 crore, whose exclusion is never questioned in a developing country like ours. Finally, the tax authorities are left with 15 crore population, who come under non-agricultural or non-BPL category. But not all of them are paying taxes as other exclusions such as Senior Citizens, non-working housewives, unemployed youth, and below taxable income earners come into play. The typical Indian family has one bread winner and five to six dependants, whether children or aged parents or a housewife. With the middle-class values still persisting through the average Indian family, we cannot reverse the situation overnight and the Indian chartered accountant organisations have put this figure at 11.5 crore. Hence, our income tax payers’ base remained still at just 3.75 crore, as it is now.As the past experiments such as demonetisation and rampant scrutiny and IT raids evinced little progress in widening the tax net, the next best alternative is to widen the tax net, bringing the agriculturists into it gradually. Since, doubling the number of tax payers never doubles the tax revenue, selective inclusion and exclusion policy is the need of the hour.In fact, many people, citing the agricultural income, evade the income tax, while those paying higher tax regularly face the prospect of further taxation in every budget. Even a token amount of tax on rich farmers by amending the exemption clause under Section 10 (1) of the Income Tax Act of India will bring 26 percent of this segment into the direct tax net.The choice for the Finance Minister is either to widen the Income Tax net or abolish it entirely, since indirect tax, say GST, in already in place. In fact, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had pitched this idea during the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. If feasible, this could save many pockets. Other tax avenues such as inheritance tax can also be explored, instead of repetitive taxation slabs at the higher end.last_img read more

Wyatt Voted ACC Player of the Week

first_imgWyatt is the second straight Louisville player to win the weekly honor, after freshman Alex Binelas received the award one week ago. It marks the first time the Cardinals have won the conference’s Player of the Week award in consecutive weeks since joining the league in 2015. The strong performance last week continues the tear the All-American has been on over the previous eight contests, in which he is batting .472 with five doubles, four homers, 20 RBIs and 14 runs scored. For the season, Wyatt has his average up to .321 with seven long balls and 38 runs batted in. LOUISVILLE, Ky. – University of Louisville junior baseball player Logan Wyatt was named the ACC Player of the Week on Monday. Louisville will be in nonconference action for its next five games, starting on Tuesday evening with a midweek game at Cincinnati. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m., ET. Print Friendly Version Wyatt was red-hot last week, hitting .550 (11-for-20) as the Cardinals picked up a win at Kentucky and took two of three from Miami. The junior had three doubles, three homers and drove in 12 runs over the four games. Wyatt also had one of the highlights of the week with a straight steal of home in the fifth inning of Saturday’s series finale as the Cardinals rallied back from a 6-0 deficit to win 9-6. Story Links Notre Dame sophomore Tommy Vail was also named the league’s Pitcher of the Week. ACC baseball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a media panel and are announced each Monday throughout the regular season.last_img read more

De La Soul Claim Theyll Get Just 10 of Streaming Revenue From

first_imgA final post reads, “Monday, when confronted and questioned whether or not all samples had been cleared for our catalgoe’s streaming release, Tommy Boy felt that it would be better the move forward with thte lresase and deal with all cleams/lawsuits later on… really? That’s just not smart business. We don’t want to be sued. “ A caption next to that one reads, “We are being placed in the line of fire. We understand respect and appreciate your support and business. We regret that you and fans have been place in the middle of this mess. De La Soul cannot afford negligent hurried business. We are fighting for our livelihood. Imagine trying to settle a #phantom2millionddollardebtand now possible lawsuits lurking??? There goes that 10% Thank you @tommyboyrecords #respectourlegacy#dorightbytheculture #tommyboycott#4080 #delasoul #30years.”At press time, reps for Tommy Boy Records had not responded to Variety’s repeated requests for comment.Speaking with Sway on Wednesday, the group’s Maseo, explained, “For some years, the catalog had been held up because … of the issues that existed behind the projects, with samples not being cleared.” He then acknowledges that few could have foreseen the forthcoming legal problems around sampling in 1989.“I don’t know what [Tommy Boy’s] deals were with clearing samples, but back then a lot was probably done on a handshake, especially when you’re an independent” label like Tommy Boy, he says. “Nothing comes to the surface until it actually turns into something. If I was the record company at that time, I would have probably thought it was a small thing and not cleared it: ‘This little 30-second thing, who would come after that?’ And it happened! I think by the time [the catalog] got to Warner Bros., people started come out of the woodwork, and I think for the most part [those] people are the ones whose business didn’t get dealt with.“Now it’s 2019,” he continues, “Tommy Boy has been able to acquire the catalog back, but there are still some infractions around the catalog, things we’re sure aren’t cleared, that might have new potential issues. Also, what’s on the table [contractually] for De La Soul is unfavorable, especially based on the infractions that have taken place, the bills that exist over time. And we have continued to pay the price, and that’s one of our big concerns with [the streaming releases of their albums]. Popular on Variety Stay Longer, Save More at The Plaza New York Experience more and up to 25% off when you extend your stay at The Plaza and savor all that New York City has to offer. Ad by The Plaza NY See More AdChoices Indeed, “3 Feet High and Rising,” produced by Prince Paul of Stetsasonic, was a pioneering event not just in hip-hop history but in the art of sample technology — and it suffered accordingly, as copyright laws were rewritten as a result of it. The group was the first to be sued by the now-famously litigious musicians Howard Kaylan and Mark Volman of the Turtles, who went after De La over the unlicensed use of a snippet of the Turtles’ song “You Showed Me” in “Transmitting Live From Mars” (the suit was ultimately settled for a reported $1.7 million). Similar problems have bedeviled several of the group’s other releases. Over the years, the catalog has moved from Tommy Boy to Warner Bros. and recently back to Tommy Boy, yet the complications have remained unresolved. On Tuesday, the group — Posdnuous (Kelvin Mercer), Trugoy (David Jolicoeur) and Maseo (Vincent Mason Jr.) — put its collective feet down and posted messages on Instagram claiming that due to the unsettled business around the albums, the royalties they receive from the releases will be miniscule, and on Wednesday they sat down for a 45-minute interview with Sway Calloway on SiriusXM’s “Sway in the Morning.”The first Instagram message reads: “Dear Fans … just got off the phone with Tommy Boy Records … negotiations (or lack therof) to release our catalog on all streaming platforms.. Uh oh.” The next message reads: “Just got wind that Tommy Boy was not happy about our last post. Touche. We are not happy about releasing our catalog under such unbalanced, unfair terms. #RespectTheArtist.” A caption next to that post reads, “For our fans to finally be able to stream and/or download our music will be a dream come true! The reality for De La… what an ugly greedy nightmare.”The next post reads, “The music WILL be released digitally. After 30 years of good music and paying their debt to Hip Hop, De L Soul unfortunately will not taste the fruit of their labor. Your purchases will roughly go 90% Tommy Boy, 10% De La. Thank you. Sincerely yours, #thephantom2milliondollardebt.” The group says that it has never earned more than “peanuts” or “pennies” on their recorded music, and instead has earned a living from touring and merchandise.“Because the catalog [hasn’t been available], it has [earned] nothing,” Mase says, with Dave adding, “So we’ve been somewhat aimlessly performing the music but we’re not getting any [income from it].”Sway asks whether the group is not with the fact that these long-lost albums are finally being made available on streaming services, which has become the primary format for hundreds of millions of music fans.“I can’t say I’m not with it,” Mase says, “I’m just not with the administrative structure behind it. Let’s be straight up: We don’t really financially benefit — there’s so many infractions around this whole thing that we’ll probably never see no money from it or any project that has these infractions.”Asked whether they’ve ever received any royalties from the albums, Dave says, “Pennies, compared to what Tommy Boy was receiving.”Yet De La Soul remained with Tommy Boy for six albums and 12 years. “We never felt like any label was really good,” Mase explains, “but the music ended up really doing well so no one could try to tell us how to make music — we had our creative freedom the whole time. That was the best thing,” he adds, “the only thing that was great [about remaining with Tommy Boy].”The group gets into greater detail about these, and happier matters in the 45-minute interview below. UPDATE Feb. 28 3:45pm ET: In a pair of Instagram posts Thursday, De La Soul said that Tidal has told the group that it will not stream the catalog until the issues outlined in this article are resolved: “Thank you Tidal, thank you Jay [Z, Tidal’s primary owner]”; the group also said that Tommy Boy “want to negotiate, but only if we sign a confidentiality agreement first,” to which the group replied, “How about we close a deal first, and then we agree to keep the deal confidential.” De La Soul’s 1989 debut “3 Feet High and Rising” is widely acknowledged as one of hip-hop’s all-time classic albums, yet it and several other releases from the group’s catalog have not been legally available on streaming services due to longstanding complications over sample clearances (or the lack thereof). And even 30 years later, as De La Soul’s longtime label, Tommy Boy Records, prepares to finally release the group’s catalog on streaming services, the problems remain — and this week, the group spoke out about them. ×Actors Reveal Their Favorite Disney PrincessesSeveral actors, like Daisy Ridley, Awkwafina, Jeff Goldblum and Gina Rodriguez, reveal their favorite Disney princesses. Google releases Magenta studio beta an open source python machine learning library

first_imgOn 11th November, the Google Brain Team released Magenta studio in beta, a suite of free music-making tools using their machine learning models. It is a collection of music plugins built on Magenta’s open source tools and models. These tools are available both as standalone Electron applications as well as plugins for Ableton Live. What is Project Magenta? Magenta is a research project which was started by some researchers and engineers from the Google Brain team with significant contributions from many other stakeholders. The project explores the role of machine learning in the process of creating art and music. It primarily involves developing new deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms to generate songs, images, drawings, and other materials. It also explores the possibility of building smart tools and interfaces to allow artists and musicians to extend their processes using these models. Magenta is powered by TensorFlow and is distributed as an open source Python library. This library allows users to manipulate music and image data which can then be used to train machine learning models. They can generate new content from these models. The project aims to demonstrate that machine learning can be utilized to enable and enhance the creative potential of all people. If the Magenta studio is used via Ableton, the Ableton Live plugin reads and writes clips from Ableton’s Session View. If a user chooses to run the studio as a standalone application, the standalone application reads and writes files from a users file system without requiring Ableton. Some of the demos include: #1 Piano Scribe Many of the generative models in Magenta.js requires the input to be a symbolic representation like Musical Instrument Digital Interface (MIDI). But now, Magenta Converts raw audio to MIDI using Onsets and Frames which  a neural network trained for polyphonic piano transcription. This means that only audio is enough to obtain an output of MIDI in the browser. #2 Beat Blender The Beat Bender is built by Google Creative Lab using MusicVAE. Users can now generate two dimensional palettes of drum beats and draw paths through the latent space to create evolving beats. #3 Tenori-of Users can utilize the Magenta.js to generate drum patterns when they hit the “Improvise” button. This is more like a take on an electronic sequencer. #4 NSynth Super This is machine learning algorithm using deep neural network to learn the characteristics of sounds, and then create a completely new sound based on these characteristics. NSynth synthesizes an entirely new sound using the acoustic qualities of the original sounds. For instance, users can get a sound that’s part flute and part sitar all at once. You can head over to the Magenta Blog for more exciting demos. Alternatively, head over to magenta.tensorflow.org to read more about this announcement. Chatfield bill protects Michigan taxpayers by prohibiting tax credit extensions

first_img Legislation ensures state can’t extend costly MEGA creditsMichigan taxpayers are protected from additional liability due to budget-busting Michigan Economic Growth Authority (MEGA) tax credits under common-sense legislation introduced today that prohibits the state from extending the costly credits, state Rep. Lee Chatfield announced.Since the MEGA credits were greatly expanded in 2008, the program has accumulated a projected taxpayer liability of $9.38 billion. The Republican-led Legislature and newly elected Gov. Rick Snyder ended MEGA in 2011, but even with the irresponsible program’s demise, state law still allows the existing credits to be increased and extended.  Legislation introduced today by state Rep. Chatfield prevents this from happening.“No future governor of Michigan should be given the opportunity to extend these MEGA credits,” said Rep. Chatfield, R-Levering. “Although the current governor has no intention of extending these harmful credits, the reality is that a less fiscally responsible administration could come into office and put our state in greater financial jeopardy.  We simply can’t allow that to happen – the stakes are too high.  It’s up to us to ensure that the mess created during the previous administration is cleaned up not only for current Michigan taxpayers, but for our future generations.”The $9.38 billion estimated liability is projected to be incurred over the next 17 years.  This year, the credits created a $325 million state budget shortfall.House Bill 4333, sponsored by Rep. Chatfield, prohibits MEGA tax credit extensions as currently allowed in the Michigan Economic Growth Authority Act.
